IPS project migrating to java.net

In an effort to consolidate our support infrastructure, we are moving the
remaining projects on opensolaris.org to java.net, including IPS. The
transition will be complete on March 24, as you may have noticed.

The project on java.net will be available via the following URL:

http://java.net/projects/ips

The source code is available from the following URLs:

ssh://<username>@hg.java.net/ips~pkg-gate
https://hg.java.net/hg/ips~pkg-gate

The latter URL does not require any association with the project or even
with java.net -- you can retrieve the source without registering.

You will need to register with java.net to stay on the mailing list,
though, which is now

pkg-***@ips.java.net

We can't transfer user accounts automatically, due to privacy restrictions
and the fact that usernames might conflict, so you'll have to register and
subscribe yourself.

As of this time, java.net does not provide a dedicated mechanism to post
code reviews, so we're piggy-backing on the "website" feature, that allows
you to post arbitrary html content. Right now, it's updated via a "website
hook", which updates the website based on the contents of a particular
repository. In this case, that repo is

https://hg.java.net/hg/ips~website-repo

and the content is viewable at

http://ips.java.net/

We may play around with this a bit to make it look nicer, but for the time
being those of you who are "Software Developers" can check out the repo,
add your webrev in a reasonable place, "hg add" it, and push. A minute or
so later, it should be available on the site. Eventually, I'd like to see
webrevs uploaded via webdav, much like webrev had rsync support for
opensolaris.org, but that's a low priority for us.

To join, once you've registered with java.net, click on "Join this Project"
in the left-hand navigation bar. That should make you a project
"Observer".

If you currently have commit rights in the opensolaris.org project, please
email me with your java.net id, and I'll add you as a "Software Developer".

I'll send out another announcement when we switch over.

Thanks,
Danek

I hope Oracle is not planning to follow in Sun's ill-fated attempt to
improve revenue for the OS sector, by renaming everything "java..."

Are we going to be talking about "the java packaging system" now? :-D

Nope, the only thing bearing the Java brand here is the project hosting
facility that was formerly known as "Project Kenai".

We wouldn't rename it to the Github Packaging System or the Sourceforge
Packaging System if we'd moved it to one of those hosting services instead.

A friendly reminder: March 24 is the last day this list will be active, and
that the IPS source repository will be available. Everyone who wants to
must switch over to the java.net versions, which you can get to via

http://java.net/projects/ips

In order to shake out some of the remaining transition steps, I've locked
the gate, and request that further pushes go to the java.net gate. I'll
continue syncing in the other direction for the next few days.

I've also put the list in "emergency moderation mode", which means that all
messages to the list will be moderated. In addition, all posters will get
a reminder to switch over, no more than once a day. All this annoyance is
in an effort to remind people to switch to the other list. I'll allow all
(non-spam) messages through anyway, but there may be some delay. Given the
low volume these days, I don't expect many people (including the list
moderators) should be especially inconvenienced by this.

I expect this will be my last note on this subject.

Holler if you notice any problems.

Thanks,
Danek
